The Vassfaret Triangel
About
"Trekanten i Vassfaret" - The Triangel - is a multi-day hiking tour between the self-serviced DNT cabins Storekrakkoia, Vassfarkoia and Fønhuskoia. We recommend using four days for the hike with start/end at Bogbrua.
Day 1: Bogbrua - Storekrak (6 km)
From the bridge Bogbrua you follow a gravel track 6 km uphill to the cabin Storkrakkoia. From up here you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Vassfaret Valley. The Storekrak cabin has limited space, with two small rooms / 6 bed spaces. There's also a small evacuation cabin with 3 bed spaces and a dog crate.
Day 2: Storekrak – Vassfarkoia (17 km)
From Storekrak the route continues towards Vassfarkoia. Soon you reach the tree line and ascend towards Sør-Aurdal's highest elevation point - the mountain Ørneflag (1243 m.a.s.l.). The trail takes a northern bend around the mountain top, but in clear weather a side trip to the highest point is highly recommended. Enjoy the wide view over Vassfaret and the village in Hedalen. Further along the trail, the 12 lakes Tolvtjerna come into view. They are located in a cluster close by each other on the open mountain. On a nice summer day, you might be tempted to take a dip. Here you will also pass by the tiny emergency hut "Harehopp". It has a wooden stove and a bunk bed and make a nice spot for a rest. Now you start the descend into the forest and to the mountain farm area Veneli with Vassfarkoia. The cabin has 17 bed spaces and a large outhouse with a dog room.
Remark: The Vassfarkoia burnt down in the spring of 2018. Until it gets rebuilt, the cabin of the Red Cross of Flå is being used as a replacement. It is unserviced (no food store!).
Day 3: Vassfarkoia - Fønhuskoia (23 km)
Today's leg starts along the cultural trail from Veneli down into the Vassfaret Valley. Along the way you will find information boards about forestry, fishing, trapping and wildlife. Enjoy the view over the valley and back towards Dytthølsknatten, Aurdalsfjorden and the mountains of Hedalsfjella. Reaching Lake Grunntjern you'll find a lovely spot for a rest in the sheltered bay just beside the trail. The terrain climbs a bit, and you reach the watermills Vassfarmølla. The little mills are well preserved an remind us of a time when Vassfaret was in active agricultural use. You cross the river on the dam Grunntjerndammen, which was built for floating of timber, and the trail continues along the eastern side of the valley past Lake Suluvatnet and along the river up to Lake Strøen. After the dam Strøsdammen you follow the gravel road for a little bit more than a kilometer before you turn onto the path that descends towards Fønhuskoia. The newest of the three cabins in Vassfaret has 4 bedrooms, one of which allows dogs and has a separate entrance. In total, Fønhuskoia has 21 bed spaces. In addition, there's an evacuation hut with two rooms. One of them houses an exhibition about Mikkjel Fønhus', the famous local novelist's work. The cabin is beautifully situated on a peninsula facing the sunset.
Day 4: Fønhuskoia - Bogbrua (33 km)
Follow the path and the gravel road back to Strøsdammen and exit on the path ascending towards Slasætra and onto Slafjellet. Enjoy a wide and far view towards distant mountain ranges as Jotunheimen, Hemsedal, Hallingskarvet and Gaustatoppen as you hike across the mountain plateau. From the outflow of Lake Fjellvatnet the route follows the track Dølavegen towards Hedalen to Lake Storaustjern and the mountain top Sæterknatten. In clear weather, the detour onto the summit is well worth the effort. The path continues over the Manfjellet mountain plateau. At the crossing, choose the newly marked trail to Langtjernkollen, the highest elevation of Hedalsfjellet at 1148 m.a.s.l. and enjoy the view towards Storbekkseilen, the upper Ådalen valley and Lake Sperillen. In clear weather, make a side trip to the abyss but please watch out! As you enter the tree line on the descend, you pass by the memorial plate of the killer bear Rugg. Now a 600 m descend down into the main valley awaits you, followed by 2.7 km easy walking along the gravel road back to Bogbrua.
We wish you a nice trip!
