About
The "Rugg" trail will take you to the memorial plate where the large bear named Rugg, that lived in Vassfaret and killed a boy of the village, was shot.
The local novelist Mikkjel Fønhus mentions Rugg the bear in his nature novel “Der vildmarka suser”. Rugg had attacked a shepherd boy who died from his injuries. A large hunting party was summoned, and Rugg was shot at Storbekkseilen 13. May 1908. A memorial plate was put up at the site, with a historical hiking trail leading up the hillside to the place.
Directions
Exit towards Vassfaret from road 243 through the Hedalen valley and follow the Vassfarvegen road for approx. 7 km until Storbekk. There are a few parking spots near the trailhead.
The trail is signed all the way up to the memorial site. In the beginning it follows a forest track along the eastern side of the stream Storbekk that later becomes a trail. At first it climbs slowly, but the last part up onto the mountain side is rather steep. There’s a beautiful view over the Vassfaret valley from the top.
