Tansbergrunden cycling tour
About
This rather remote and beautiful cycling route leads along quiet, slightly undulating mountain roads, largely above the tree line at 850–1000 m.a.s.l., offering beautiful vistas in all directions. You will pass by idyllic summer farm areas, and there’s a rest area and bathing spot at Tansberg. Please note that the signage along this route is of variable standard, so we strongly recommend to bring a topographical map for supplementary navigation.
Difficulty: moderate; suitable for older children; contains trail sections where you have to push your bike
Distance: approx. 35 km
Elevation gain: approx. 690 meters
Route: Nythun-Tansberg-Juvike-Siglovatnet-Nythun
Directions:
From Fagernes, drive to the mountain lodge Nythun Høyfjellstue at Kruk where you can park your car against a fee. From there, continue by bike along Steinsetbygdvegen for another km and turn left onto Hølstølsvegen (gravel). After approx. 2 km, turn right onto Svarthamarvegen and follow it via Grøslie, Dalen and Nørdre Bjørnhovd to a junction south-east of Lake Nisetjernet, at the start of a downhill slope. Turn left here, towards the summer farm Nisestøladn, and after crossing over the bridge, keep straight ahead and follow a narrow trail along the north-eastern side of Lake Tansbergfjorden. Here you will need to dismount and walk with your bike for approx. 2 km until Tansberg, where you are back on a farm road. Follow the road to the left to Lie and keep going past Lake Veslevatnet until you reach a junction north of Lake Mellsenn. Turn left towards Juvike and follow the bicycle signs downhill to Lake Siglovatnet, where you may have to push your bike again for a short distance. Then it’s uphill again before a quite steep and curvy downhill run (be careful here!) to Grøslie, where you reach Svarthamarvegen again. Exit onto it to the right and after approx. 1 km, turn left onto Hølstølvegen back to Nythun.
Tip: The Tansberg circuit can also be cycled from the alternative starting point at the ski centre in Skrautvål where there is free parking. From here, follow Svarthamarvegen via Grøslie, Dalen and Nørdre Bjørnhovd as described avobe. This adds 5 km return and an extra 75 m of elevation gain to the tour.
