Vassfaret

Vassfaret is a valley with forests and lakes surrounded by hills and mountains, located in the very south of Valdres. This kind of landscape is typical for eastern inland Norway. For 100s of years, Vassfaret har been used for farming, forestry and hunting, and finding have shown that the area has been used by people since before the plague (1349). Vassfaret is known for having preserved its wilderness character until today, as one of the very few areas left in Norway.

History, legends and tales of Vassfaret

People have been living in Vassfaret from the mid 18^th century until 1921. There have been approx. 20-30 summer farms in total, and you can still find remains from 12 farms and farm houses. Bjørke, Vassfarplassen and Olsonheimen are the best known. There are a lot of tales connected to the nature and people of Vassfaret. Writers like Mikkjel Fønhus, Per Hohle and Edvard Elsrud have gathered inspiration for their work from Vassfaret and Vidalen.
