Beitostølen walking trails
About
Recommended trails in Beitostølen
A number of trails were created by animals grazing in the hillside at a time when mountain farming still took place in Beitostølen. Now hikers use the trails for smaller hikes in the area.
The trail network is marked by poles with a number in every crossing. You can start out at several places along road no. 51. Choose a trip that suits your capability and liking. The chair lift at Bjødnabakken can be used within its opening hours (purchase a one way ticket for the ride up, you can ride back down for free) until August 13.
Please show consideration to grazing and nesting animals and birds, and keep your dog on a lead during the period 01. April to 01. October.
Familiy trail with rebus, 2.4 km
For a familiy friendly short hike with a rebus riddle for children, follow checkpoints 1-11, starting across the Bergo Hotel.
Tutjern-Melbyfjellet
For a longer hike with great view, try Tutjern-Melbyfjellet using trails that suit you. At Tutjern, there is a nice resting area. From here the round trip over Melbyfjellet is 2 km. The northwestern part has a short, quite steep section, so we recommend walking it clockwise.
Knausehøgda-Garli roundtrip, approx. 8 km
The most convenient starting point for this option is the centre of Beitostølen. Walk past checkpoints 32-36-44-47-51-54. From the top of the Knausehøgde ridge you can enjoy a beautiful view towards Mugnetind and Bitihorn. You walk around a wetland with marshes and tarns. Maybe you even hear or spot the waders that breed here. Below the Knausehøgde ridge in the birch forest, there's lush vegetation with some rare plants, among them a couple of orchid species.
