Ski tour to Fagerdalshøe and Synshorn
About
The summits of Synshorn and Fagerdalshøe are great touringski and randonnée destinations. They are easily accessible from the eastern end of Bygdin. Park your car at the Fagerstrand parking area and start you tour from there. The ascend in the direction of Synshorn starts right away. Be aware of potential avalanche danger and choose your route with care where the terrain is least steep. This is a very popular tour, and there will most likely be tracks from other skiers to follow.
From the summit of Synshorn, you have an amazing view 360 degrees around, towards Jotunheimen, Lake Bygdin, Langsua and northern Valdres. However, the view to the east with road 51 deep below, is possibly the most breathtaking.
You can run down from Synshorn, or you can continue in the direction of Fagerdalshøe. Stay on top of the ridge all the way towards the next summit point. You can choose to return in the direction of Synshorn before you run downhill, or descend from Fagerdalshøe along the ridge that stretches westward. The descend from here into Fagerdalen Valley is steeper than that from Synshorn and is recommended only for experienced offpist skiers. Remember to take all precautions and choose the route according to your downhill skiing skills.
If you are not tired yet, you may choose to do a third ascend from Fagerdalen to the summit of Mefjellet before you run all the way back down to the car. A fantastic trip which is well suited for late winter and spring.
Please be aware that avalanches can occur in hillsides with inclinations lower than 30 degrees and that it is you who is responsible for making the right choices. If you uncertain about having the experience and knowledge to set out safely on your own, come and join a guided tour with Jotunheimen Mountaineering or Beito Aktiv & Skiskole!
Safety: Fagerdalshøe and Synshorn on skis are off-piste mountain ski tours. Read our safety information here before you set out.
