Ski tour to Bitihorn
About
The mountain top Bitihorn (1607 m.a.s.l.) is a landmark, an exceptional viewpoint and a popular hiking and skiing destination.
As a winter tour, it can be combined with the bus service by Valdresekspressen from Beitostølen to Bygdin. (Choose Beitostølen, Øystre Slidre, Oppland and Bygdin, Vang, Innlandet as departure and destination points in the online ticket service). The bus runs Thur-Sun from 16. Febuary to 31. Mars and daily from 1. to 10. April 2023.
At Bygdin Høifieldshotel they serve really good waffles and lunch dishes in beautiful mountain nature. After or before a ski tour, they taste extra good.
Directions and tour description
Distance: Approx. 4.5 km one way
Elevation gain: Approx. 550 meters
Tour characteristics: Several route choices with less than 30 degress inclination, but potential terrain traps and avalanche outflow zones
From Bygdin Hotel, the first kilometer is along the road past the small hill of 1154 m.a.s.l, and then hold more to the right over the flat Raudfjordsanden and around the foot of the northern ridge of the mountain. A reindeer fence is passed through a gate. Now the mountain's whole north-west flank opens up at your feet. You have now several route choices, depending on the snow conditions and avalanche situation.
"Follow ridges and stay safe" is a Norwegian mountaineering rule suggesting to avoid any loose flanks that potentially release rock slides or avalanches. The western ridge up to the summit of Bitihorn is what can be called the normal route. The upper part is marked with iron poles to ease orientation in poor sight for the maintenance people of the telecommunications equipment on the summit. Cross over low in the flank and follow the ridge up.
In case the conditions allow an earlier, steeper ascend in the flank, be especially aware of avalanche release zones from the steep hill above and potential terrain traps in the basin.
Safety: Bitihorn on skis is an off-piste mountain ski tour. Read our safety information here before you set out.
